Laser hair removal does not cost as much as electrolysis but can be expensive for the average consumer.  In other words, what do you plan to sacrifice in order to afford the procedures.  That's right, I said procedures with an "s".  Remember, laser hair removal, requires multiple treatments, and can cost $500 to well over $1000 for most areas of the body. Three or four treatments, six to eight weeks apart, may be needed to achieve a meaningful reduction in hair growth and you probably wont be able to see the reduction until after a couple of growth periods (approximately 12 months total).

Okay, now it's time for some of the bad news (as if the expense of the procedure itself isn't enough bad news).  There can be some side effects to laser hair removal.  Generally, laser hair removal performed by a licensed practitioner with an approved laser is safe and has a low risk of lasting side effects.  So, yes as with any medical procedure you have to do some homework for your own safety.  Make sure whomever you go to that he or she is a licensed practitioner and that a FDA-approved device is used for the procedure. Additionally, steer clear from "discount" laser centers.  You would go to a "discount" heart surgery center or a "discount" pediatrician would you?  So, don't take the chance with the laser hair removal procedure either.  I did mention a laser is used during this process didn't I?  And, be sure to watch out for poorly trained technicians with no medical experience.  Many of these laser centers have them.

Short-term side effects such as swelling, redness, and pain are a result of the lasers' heat and should eventually clear up.  Blistering and hyperpigmentation (temporary darkening of the skin), may be embarrassing but should also clear up with time.  Scarring and burns are more permanent and can be unfortunately side effects, as well. Like any medical procedure, laser hair removal has its own set of risks that should be thoroughly discussed with your medical practitioner prior to committing to the procedure. It would be advisable to make sure an actual physician is performing the work or supervising.
